Beauty, Capitalism, and Patriarchy

Though women today have many more opportunities to work outside the domestic sphere than they did years ago, they remain imprisoned by a patriarchal society that dictates various aspects of their lives, even down to the way they look and dress. Men hold power in our society and women are expected to strive to achieve an impossible standard of beauty simply to "get guys." Because the perfection that is expected of women is unattainable, women lose just as much power over their own life as they gain by being able to work beyond the domestic world. In essence, as long as women are viewed as objects that are intended to be judged for beauty by men, they cannot achieve power and remain inhibited.
