Beauty, Capitalism, and Patriarchy

I feel like the pressure to be perfect is something that is driven by capitalism but is perpetuated by our own image of ourselves.  People tend to have a much lower opinion of themselves than others do, and as a result are often more susceptible to the extreme standards set by society.  Ultimately, it is their opinion that matters to marketers when selling a product, as they will be the ones to buy the product being advertised.  The disconnect occurs when a much higher pressure is placed upon women to appear both perfect and desirable to men and superior to other women.  Men, on the other hand, have less of an obligation to compete with each other; the women are there to be chosen by men, not the other way around.

  1. I agree with your assertion about the disconnect, and that beauty is attained to please others. I feel that we as a society should be trained to love ourselves the way we are. If we want to exercise or eat differently to be healthy that's fine, but spending money to gain perfection is a different story.
