Prior to now, I had never been exposed to Freud's theories. However, when i started to familiarize myself with his ideas I realized that I’m mostly faced with the concept of conscious and unconscious in my everyday life. I agree that all persons have the unconscious desire to please others and be recognized. I believe the need to please others is displayed very openly in every culture in which everybody feels the need to be liked and approved of by others. The Oedipus complex is one that is prevalent in my culture. I come from a male-dominant society in which they are extremely protective over the females in their family. I think perhaps Freud's Oedipus complex applies to this phenomenon.
